Audience Definition: Why it Matters - article

Perhaps you have written a book that you believe is for everyone. Here you'll learn why it's important to target an audience to increase sales.

You have written you book, and you are sure it is for everyone. All you have to do is deliver your book to the marketplace and watch the profits roll in. This naïve position will ensure you won't succeed. Sure, some books do appeal to many readers, but in almost every case these books appealed to a select audience first before gaining wide appeal.

Audience definition is an idea borrowed from marketing. The best marketing efforts are highly targeted. This is true for any product, including books. Additionally, knowing your audience is critical to building your overall brand. To do this you must find your audience and obtain their devotion... and you can't find them if you don't know who you are targeting. Writing a book is not a self-activity but is for the express purpose of connecting with readers. If you have written a book, you are on a journey to interact with readers. Ask yourself: Who will read a historical romance novel? Who will read a sci-fi epic with plenty of gore? Who will read self-help book about weight loss? Now ask yourself this question: Who will read my book?

Defining your audience will help you in so many ways. Your book must meet the desires and needs of your readers to find true success. It's impossible to make everyone happy. Understanding who will have interest in your book will help you gauge their reaction to your work. Knowing your audience will dictate the amount of technical/explanatory information you must provide. If you are writing a book about orchids and your audience is expert growers, you will provide complex technical information. If your orchid book is for "newbies," you will offer limited technical information with plenty of explanatory material. Even the length of your book will be affected by the intended readers.

A defined audience will shape every aspect of a book. At the end of day, your creative endeavor is a product. There is no need to create a product unless you have a buyer in mind. Take time to define your audience to achieve success.

    So, If I know my market is Sci-fi epic.  How do I get my book in-front of that Audience?  Age group? Teens to Adults.    Thanks.

    I think in writing a book, you would love for your reader to gain great interest in what story are trying to gain from your writing. Not everyone may like what you are saying. But you would love for everyone to love the story. In selling your book you have to depend on your story, and how it is presented in order that they will love the story.     Hello Mrs. Blaisdell, After reading your message I began to think about the purpose of why I was writing my book. And the bottom line of it all boils down to understanding that there is a difference between marketing and writing. Your information was very helpful because when I write it an expression that is released from within. My question at this point, would this help establish a solid platform before connecting with an audience?

    Audience definition definitely matters. I wrote my first erotic novel based on a true story, and I was trying to target young and middle-aged people who found themselves in complex romantic relationships. My novel contains some pornography, and some of my older readers were offended by the pornography in my novel. However, without the porn, without the kink, my characters would not have been believable. In other words, my female protagonist is a naive widow who thinks she has found her soul mate but instead found herself involved with a sex addict! If I hadn't used pornography in the novel, I would not have been able to address the issue of sex addiction and the plot would have completely fallen apart. I have only begun to market my book, but I coined the term "pornerotica" in order to target the right audience. In other words, if a person is offended by pornography, that person would not like my book at all, and my objective is to find my niche and target readers who will relate to and appreciate my book. It is important, as you said, to find buyers for your product. I'm still working on this project. E. G. Power
