Like it or not, social media has become a primary way for authors to connect with readers, create awareness for their work, and promote their books. Author Annie Sullivan is very active on social media in order to stay engaged with readers of her young adult novels. While it used to just be nonfiction authors needing a platform, traditional publishers are now expecting all types of authors to have a strong online presence, she says. When should you start building this presence? The earlier, the better, per Sullivan.
Sullivan recommends authors create an account on their chosen platform and start following other authors to see how they are using social media. You can start building a following by posting book reviews and tagging authors, participating in groups or contests, and by simply interacting with others.
For her forthcoming children's book, Ghouldilocks and The Three Ghosts, Sullivan plans to continue with what she has been doing for her young adult novels, but also plans to add some new efforts to create fun and excitement around her book, including offering prizes for spreading the word . She encourages authors to think outside of the box and about how you can reach readers and purchase decision-makers.
