Once you understand the basic purpose and functions of search engines you need to prepare your website or blog to be “optimized.” In addition to optimizing tactics, you must make a commitment to update your website regularly.
When you create a website or blog, you need to think about your site's text, links and images. They should contain your main “key phrase.” Then, when a search engine sends out spiders to crawl your website, they can read key phrases and determine where to classify you within the engine's database.Note the expression “key phrase.” A simple “keyword” is too general and will no longer be specific enough for your site to be classified desirably. If your website isn’t located in the right kind of database location, it will never make it to the top of the ranked results list. For example, doing a search for “books” on Google will return millions of results. When a searcher makes this kind of mistake, he follows it with another search, this time using a “key phrase.” He might choose “Scary books,” or “California book stores.” Even though the more refined search will return fewer results, it will still produce millions. Likely the searcher will refine further with “Stephen King novels,” “The Shining,” or “Los Angeles used book stores.” This final round of searching is what your website should appeal to.
You will need to adjust the frequency with which key phrases appear. Be sure to include a key phrase or phrases in the title of your site and even in your domain name, if possible. Include key phrases in your meta tags and descriptions. Then, be sure that your key phrase is in the first and last sentences of your text, as well as appearing every hundred words or so.
You might worry that your writing will end up sounding like forced text. However, you should be aware that search engines ignore certain “stop words.” These are common words that the spider has been programmed to skip over when scanning a site. So include these stop words within your key phrase throughout the text. For example, “Los Angeles used book store” can be included in your text in the form of “When shopping in Los Angeles and looking for used book stores...” (Just search “search engine stop words” for a complete list of these handy words.)
There are many ways to build a link’s popularity. You can find a “link exchange” service, which, for a fee, will offer links back to your site. Visit the websites and blogs of other authors, and propose doing a guest blog, in exchange for one in return. Not only does this mutually benefit both blogs, but such an exchange can also lead to a cross-over of new readers and build up link popularity.
You will have a continuing role in this process. You will need to keep things fresh and relevant on your website, with regular updates and quality content that is appealing to your target audience. Scheduling tip: post at least once a week and link your website to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, so that content from your website can automatically make its way to your social media pages.
