Indy Reads Books' former Executive Director M. Travis DiNicola had a dream to publish an anthology. Indy Writes Books became a reality after the organization received grant money to fund the publication. The book's concept, as Director of Indy Reads Books Alyssa Starr Newerth explains, was to compile the work of authors and writers from the state of Indiana. The organization reached out and requested writing submissions that covered the topics of Indiana, reading, bookstores, or literacy, and received an incredible response. The anthology features twenty-seven authors, poets, and even puzzle-makers with significant Indiana connections, including well-known authors John Green and Dan Wakefield. The project took at least a year to pull together and publish and all proceeds from the book help support Indy Reads' adult literacy programs.
