Like many young, aspiring authors, writer, producer, and TV host Herbie J Pilato believed his first book would get picked up by an agent or publisher very quickly. This was not the case. Pilato found that you can have a great proposal or pitch, but if you don’t find the right editor, publisher, or other decision-maker who absolutely loves your project, it will be an uphill battle. Pilato went through two rounds of multiple rejections before selling 15,000 copies of his book, after which the publisher dropped the book and stopped selling copies. Unfortunately, this happens all the time, Pilato says – which means you can’t become attached to your goal. If you’re only focused on your expectations, you’ll end up disappointed.
