What classifies a book as a romance novel? According to romance author Laurie Schnebly Campbell, if the two main characters have equal "screen time" and the focus is on their love story, the novel might fall under the romance category. A book can have plenty of romance without being classified as a romance novel. If a story includes just one main character it likely falls under a genre other than romance.
