When planning to write a fiction series it's important to have a strategy up front. For writers that are new to creating a fiction series, Echoes Across Time author Matthew Ballard recommends they focus on making the first book a complete story, but think about leaving some things unanswered at the end. This can be done with cliffhangers or open-ended questions. When writing that first book Ballard advises writers to read books in their genre to understand reader expectations. Readers will forgive some simple errors, he says, but will not forgive if the writer doesn't honor the known elements in that genre. He also recommends committing to the writing process everyday and to developing your craft. One big don't: don't stop writing to edit - this will interrupt your creative flow. Save all editing until your first draft is complete.
