Building complex, imaginary and alternative worlds not only takes skill as a writer, but it also takes vast amounts of research and organization. Sci-fi and fantasy author Maurice Broaddus says that many writers underestimate the amount of research that should be done in order to make your world as realistic and relatable as possible. The more complex your world, the more research you need to do, and the more research, the more organized you must be. In his workshop on world building Broaddus recommends to his students to keep a "story bible" as they are developing their world and to use this bible as a reference during the entire writing process. When creating a complex world it is essential to maintain consistency throughout the entire story or series of stories.
Wow- very helpful...I always have to go back and remind myself of what the characters are doing and thinking and backgrounds...will get right on that! Thanks so much!
I learned that lesson it's one reason I had not wrote my one story.
