Important Lessons Learned from Community Journalism - video
Community journalism focuses on smaller, local news stories instead of regional or world news. This form of journalism offers a different perspective and can teach writers and journalist important lessons. Bill Handy, professor of journalism at Northwestern University, discusses the lessons learned from community journalism and how those lessons can be helpful to all writers and journalists. In community journalism, it's about trust. The community will trust and respect a journalistic institution if it demonstrates that it cares and has the same goals and values as the community it serves. If the community feels that the journalistic institution is part of the community, then they listen to hard truths about themselves. However, if the community feels that the journalistic publication is just being sensational or trying to get a good headline, then they won't listen.
