For author Bryan Beach, the writing process definitely differs when writing short versus long fiction. When writing short stories or novelettes he tends to write in a stream of consciousness or continuous flow. He starts with a simple idea and just runs with it, allowing himself to be in the moment. When writing longer fiction such as novels, Beach starts by planning and researching if needed, using notes and outlines for guidance. This practice makes it much easier to maintain continuity throughout the piece.
