Social media spreads ideas quickly, and helps writers keep a finger on the pulse of popular culture, explains Herbie J Pilato, a writer, producer, TV host, and president of Television, Ink. For example, he has noticed environmental activism becoming a mainstream interest partially because of social media and the way it brings many voices together. This wealth of information and constant communication can make for compelling stories. But, Pilato points out, even if a writer tells a story that fits with a certain trend — and could appeal to millions — it still has to be pitched to the one, right person. Keep trying until you find that person, he advises.
