Before you get started writing a young adult book, make sure you've done your research. Author Jo Whittemore provides some helpful writing tips for YA authors. First, make sure to read a lot of YA books, as well as books in any other field in which you write. Other sources to learn from are television and movies, because you can glean a lot from screenwriting. Make observation part of your research. Whether you are writing the character of a child or writing for children, it is helpful to obverse children in real life—how they act, what they say, their expressions, their motivations, and unique qualities.
