The Co-Author Writing Process - podcast

What makes co-authoring an efficient, ego-free writing process is when both writers are solely focused on improvement. Doug Stone and Shelia Heen, co-authors of "Thanks for the Feedback," work together on the table of contents, each draft a chapter and then swap. Sometimes complete rewrites occur, but by trading off everything each person writes, the book takes on a unified voice. Many times neither writer can remember who wrote which piece. The co-authors also agree on a rule: they address the next worst thing to fix, so that the book can be evenly polished. They don't track how many revisions occur or keep score. At the end of the day, the mutual goal of making the book better does just that.
