In the early 2000's, a Japanese–American graphic novel author and illustrator named Kazu Kibuishi created and released the first volume of Flight, an American comics anthology series. Kibuishi collaborated with comic artists from all around the world on this series including Singapore-based comic artist and graphic novelist Sonny Liew. The artists contributed to the series by posting their drafts in an online forum, providing feedback to other artists, and revising their own work based on feedback received. Liew enjoyed this process and connecting with other comic artists, which inspired him to create his own anthology comprised of artists in Southeast Asia. This collaboration led to the Eisner-nominated, multi-volume graphic novel anthology Liquid City.
