Author Christina Hoag on Her Book Editing Process

Many writers dread the manuscript editing and revision process. This is because it is tedious and lengthy. Some writers, however, love the process because it gives them the opportunity to fine tune all elements of the story and bring it to life. Author and writing instructor Christina Hoag has a deep appreciation for the revision process because "it's when your magic and art can happen". Following the advice of renowned author Stephen King, she steps away from a writing project for at least 4 to 6 weeks once she has completed the first draft. This distance from the manuscript allows Hoag to more easily identify what's not working in a story when she's ready to revisit it. She will then go through multiple revisions and take the manuscript as far as she can before submitting to her publisher for review.
