Advice for Staying on Track During the Writing and Editing Process

Every author approaches the writing and editing processes differently. What works well for one author may not work well for another, but it's helpful to learn about how experienced authors have been able to reach their goals.

Before he digs into writing a story, author AJ Baker finds it helpful to outline the beginning, the ending, and at least a few pivotal moments in the middle of the story. He then works to fill in the gaps in the story. While this may not offer a complete roadmap as he is writing, it gives him a great starting point. Baker then uses the editing and revision process to polish the sections of the story that need more work.

When Baker is feeling stuck creatively, he finds it helpful to take a walk, read outside of the genre he's working on, and talk to others with a different outlook on life.
