The Qualities of a Captivating True Story or Documentary - video

When an author aspires to write a story that can be adapted to a documentary, it's important to understand the current landscape for documentary films. An author must identify where his or her story fits in, and determine if it has qualities that will make it stand out amongst the other content that is being developed or that is already available to audiences. Per producer and director, David Wong, the qualities of a true story that will give writers an edge and captivate audiences include rare and distinctly unique characters or story lines, and proven traction with the material.

  • Thank you David.  Wow, I totally get what you are saying.  This is the best clip I've watched so far.  I hope to aspire to those same words that you have expressed.  Thank you.

  • This is exactly how I felt when I finished writing my novel, I started having doubts about work and what people woukd think about. It feels good to know thats a normal feeling. Thanks for the advice : )

  • I agree you have to write what you know.   i discovered, the more you write, the more you remember about the things to write. Dont'give up on your story even though it may seem difficult.Give it a break if you have too but always come back and begin again. Little by little you will finish it if it was worth starting it is worth finishing.  Remember, your story will never end it will continue on through eternity.

  • This is my first time here. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Mr. David Wong. I am planning to write a documentary or a biography. I cannot agree less than what you said. I think the most essential element in writing documentaries, biographies or true stories is the honesty that the writer is putting into it. Cheers to future reads!
