Finding unique photos can be one of the biggest, and most expensive challenges in the process of writing a biography. Author and biographer Brian Jay Jones had an advantage with his Jim Henson biography because he had the support of the family, which provided him with access to many unique photos and images for free. Depending on the subject matter, biographers may run into a lot of proprietary images that will take a long time to clear and may come with a significant fee to use. Image archives such as Getty Images do charge small fees to download photos, but can be an affordable resource for images that haven't been used before. Jones advises other biographers to find free photos wherever you can, otherwise it will come out of your pocket.
