Breaking into Television - video

Do you have an idea for a television show? Whether you've already written a book that could be turned into a TV show, or you have an idea in your head, there are some tricks you'll need to know if you want to turn your idea to TV series. Writer and producer Doreen Spicer shares her thoughts on how to turn your book into a TV series and break into television with your writing. There are several different ways you can get your work on television. The traditional model involves finding an agent who will represent you by going to networks—but it’s often tough to get that kind of break these days. There are some new approaches you should consider exploring. You can produce a web series based on your work, and if the series gets enough fans and the right people see it, that can result in a show on a major network. Or you can produce your own pilot and showcase it at conferences and events. Of course, as with any kind of writing project, you need to know who your target audience is. You also need people who will invest time and even money into your project. Don't overlook the importance of passion. If you have passion for something, you’ll be able to transfer that passion to the people you’re pitching to—and they’ll get it. And that’s how you break into television.
