If you are familiar and comfortable with the intricacies of the screenplay format, you have nothing to lose by adapting your novel into a screenplay yourself, says author and film post-production supervisor Sheryl Benko. But just because you don’t have experience with screenplays doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try – if you have written a novel, you have it in you to write a screenplay, Benko says. Think of your screenplay as an extension of your book, not a replica of it. Learn the format and process of screenplays, and let others read your screenplay and see what they think to determine if you are on to something.
